Ian Brown is a retired Senior Physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley. Ian was the Leader
of the Plasma Applications Group until February 2001. His research involves
the development of plasma and ion beam sources and their application for
materials synthesis and modification. He received his Ph.D. in plasma physics
from the University of Sydney and has held research and teaching positions
at Princeton University, the University of California at Berkeley, and
the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics at Garching, Germany. He is
author / co-author of over 250 research papers and his book, "The Physics
and Technology of Ion Sources" (Wiley, 1989), has become a standard in
the field. His work on vacuum arc ion sources and materials surface modification
has led to two R&D-100 awards and has resulted in a number of patents.
He is a Fellow of the APS, the IEEE,
the Institute of Physics UK, and the Australian Institute of Physics; a
Member of the AVS,MRS,
and the Society for Biomaterials; and a member of the Böhmische Physicsl
Society.
